Hi team Poznan!
I have a question. What's with the "railway switches" metaphor? I have no training in trains but I assume the "switches" are things that switch the course of motion? Is this metaphor actually being used at the negotiations or is it just a way that policy wonks are trying to make it understandable for the rest of us?!

Thanks for the question, Aftab! I'll agree with you; at first I thought it was a little strange, and probably something lost in cultural translation from Germany. This might remain to be true, but I think in a way there actually IS something solid about this metaphor. Trains or not, this meeting IS about setting the future direction of the global climate regime in a very constricting way. This process needs to switch from the 'talking' mode it's been in since [last yr's mtg in] Bali, to 'negotiating' mode as it heads towards a deal in Copenhagen. This has to happen here, in Poznan. So, as this meeting launches the formal negotiations and sets out mandates to create formal negotating 'text,' it will also be (inherently) setting a definitive direction, much like a train tracks. We've been on the train since Bali, going in a inderminate direction, but Poznan gives us a chance to 'switch rails' and head straight for a good deal in Copenhagen. (or a terrible deal, if certain countries choose another switch).

Did that make any sense? Haha, probably not. Err. Basically it's about making definitive choices about what's in and what's out of a Copenhagen deal for post-2012.

Anyways, to answer your actual question, no, people are not actually talking about trains. smile

Hope that helps!
