Weekend in Poznan
December 7, 2008 - 06:27 PM

Sunday afternoon in Poznan I woke up in an empty room in the Sheraton – don’t ask me whose it was.

It’s been a week of grey, freezing weather and frankly we are all getting a bit tired of it. Yesterday, I swear I saw some taxi drivers using the jumper cables on each other.

Someone told me the conference has been overtaken by business spivs trying to sell carbon credits, and Al Gore is rumoured to be coming later on. Time to rug up!

My eyes are taking a permanent shade of red and my hair looks an abandoned birds nest. Against our better judgment, we decided to go out into the weather for a pub crawl. If truth were told, this was because we had been banned from the Proletaryat night club the night before.

While Gupta and Xao had been their most lucrative customers by far, their belligerence was becoming too hard for anyone to take. Honestly, I don’t know why we hang out with them, but we guess, if they behave like that, then what we're doing won't make much difference.

Big Jim from San Francisco apparently is none the wiser that much of the damage they have caused has been charged to his credit card. This time we all vowed to only drink a few cocktails.

For afternoon/breakfast, we found ourselves in a Chinese restaurant lit up with big fluorescent lights which just served to show the ghostly pallor that most of us have begun to take on. Even Jonah from Tuvalu looks more like Sven from Sweden.

We piled up our plates with the self-serve beef and black bean and chicken and cashews. As usual, Xao made a spectacle of himself, throwing a handful of beans onto the window. Jim apologized for him.

That night we went to the Czytelnia nightclub. As well as being asked to leave, we considered it altogether a bit too artsy for our taste. I think the next stop was the Lizard King, but then it was all a blur. Once again, we forgot about our vows, but somehow made it back to my own room at the Sheraton. Bonus!
